NayanTara Gurung Kakshapati graduated from Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts with a Bacherlors in International Relations and Studio Art and went on to the SALT Institute of Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine to study documentary photography.
NayanTara began working as a freelance photographer in Nepal during the April uprising in 2006, and soon after joined Y! Magazine - a magazine carrying socio-political content targeting young people between the ages of 18 and 35. She is eager to cover in-depth and issue-driven stories that go beyond making headlines.
Her work has been published in local publications such as the Nepali Times and ECS magazine, and in Nepalaya's popular book on the Maoist insurgency 'A People War', that continues to travel widely from East to West of Nepal.
NayanTara is also the co-founder of photo.circle - a platform for Nepali visual storytellers that meets once a month to present and critique work as a community. She is keen to push Nepali publications to provide more space and support for photo feature work.
