Nazrul Islam was born in Khulna, Bangladesh. After completing his studies, he started his photography career as a freelancer in 1994. Now, he works as a photojournalist with experience in portraits, corporate portfolios, photojournalism and documentary photography.
As a photographer, his main interests lie in people and society, such as portraits, culture, landscapes and topics with historical significance. He also attended a Workshop on Photojournalism for Rural Photographers, organised by DrikNEWS. In 2006, he received a prize on SAARC Charter Day, organised by the SAARC's Agricultural Information Center campus. He has also been awarded honourable mention for his photographs on the historical sites of Bangladesh in a photography competition in 2007, organised by Maati Imagine Bangladesh. He also won the first prize in BBC Buzz Photo Competition in 2009 and also a Gold Medal from the 70th International Photographic Salon of Japan 2009. His work was published in People Diary UK, and various photographs by him has also been repeatedly selected as photo of the day on www.earthshots.org and www.photoburst.net.
